Course design with Rosedale Global High School.

Past and current courses. Each course is listed below in reverse chronological order. Begin with my most recent design to learn about the project, my specific role, and the skills I used to bring it to life.

Learning Strategies (GLS10).

Date: March- August, 2021

Project description.

This project was my most sophisticated design to date. I was responsible for designing and developing the entire 6-unit course for grade 9 learners needing a little bit of extra support. This was also my most challenging target audience given learners taking this course do so because they are struggling with their learning. I felt this was my best effort and most meaningful attempt so far in course design for Rosedale.

  • Unit 1: Entering the ordinary World (assessing own learning skills)

  • Unit 2: The Adventure Begins (literacy and study skills)

  • Unit 3: Productive Skills (writing and speaking skills to show learning)

  • Unit 4: Number Know-How (basic numeracy)

  • Unit 5: Together, Forever (teamwork, conflict management, building a learning community)

  • Unit 6: Ins and Outs (lifelong learning, learning supports)

Each unit was made up of 3 lessons, a unit review and reflection, and a unit project for assessment.

My work included:

  • All course content and development

  • Lesson plans, differentiated learning resources, supporting materials

  • Self-check quizzes, discussion forums, assignments & rubrics

  • Graphics, including infographics and images (an infographic example can be seen to the right)

  • Gamified course elements like branching narratives and scenarios

  • Interactive elements such as hotspot interactions, interactive books, accordion-style dropdowns, collages, drag and drop text/image features, and interactive videos

Designing Your Future (GWL30).

Date: September - December, 2020

Project Description.

My first contract with Rosedale Academy that was unaffiliated with the Vancouver Film School, GWL30 was a guidance and career exploration course that opened up many new design and development opportunities for me to explore. The course used an affiliate website, Unifrog, to support students in selecting learning paths based on their interests that build toward future careers of their choice. I developed 4 out of the 6 units in the course.

  • Unit 3: Finding Fulfillment (money and values)

  • Unit 4: Taking Direction (goal setting and mentorship)

  • Unit 5: Get Schooled (learning paths and post-secondary plans)

  • Unit 6: Into the Future (future skills, career planning, lifelong learning)

Each unit contained 3 lessons, a unit review and reflection, and a unit project for assessment. I employed an iterative design process for my units and pitched each lesson at various stages of completion for feedback and re-design. I worked closely with the curriculum team as this project was close to the goals of Rosedale Academy’s mandate for learning.

My work included:

  • 4 units of content development

  • Employing the Rosedale Academy lesson format with adaptations for opportunities for student reflection

  • Designing graphics and sample assignments for each lesson and overall unit (see an example to the left)

  • All accompanying lesson supports (lesson plans, rubrics) for the 4 units

ASM3M-1.png

Media Arts 11 (ASM3M).

Date: March - July, 2020

Project description.

This project was more specialized than those I had developed before. Media Arts 11 was designed to be an entirely animation-centered course and had been in development long before I joined the project. I was brought on to take the video tutorials developed by a content expert and support them with a leaner journey and course narrative, as well as other supporting materials development.

  • Unit 1: The Moving Image

  • Unit 2: Animation Principles

  • Unit 3: Pre-Production

  • Unit 4: Portfolio Project (Production)

Each unit was made up of 6 lessons as students worked toward a final animated short story.

My work included:

  • All course narrative and learner journey structure

  • Lesson plans, differentiated learning resources, supporting materials

  • Self-check quizzes, discussion forums, assignments & rubrics

Skills.

Structuring narrative and learner journey

Scaffolding animation tutorials toward a final assignment

Design of supporting materials & materials development

AVI20-2.png

Visual Arts 10 (AVI20).

Date: September - December, 2019

Project description.

My second course design in collaboration with the Vancouver Film School and Rosedale Academy was a visual arts course at the grade 10 level. I designed and developed the 4-unit course from beginning to end using both my curriculum design skills and content expertise in the media arts.

  • Unit 1: Lens-Based Media

  • Unit 2: Digital Design

  • Unit 3: Animation

  • Unit 4: Game Design

Each unit contained 5 lessons and a unit project for assessment. Rather than the 3-part lesson structure used on Media Arts 10, we decided on a 4-part lesson structure to make the information break down more manageable and more closely aligned with Universal Design for Learning guidelines.

My work included:

  • Course content and narrative

  • Media selection and art choices

  • Tutorials on using content creation tools in a variety of media (example on the left)

  • All accompanying lesson supports (lesson plans, rubrics)

Skills:

Step-by-step tutorial creation in art creation tools and methods

Media Arts 10 (ASM20).

Date: January - June, 2018

Project description.

My first collaboration with Rosedale Academy, written in conjunction with the Vancouver Film School. The course was written for grade 10 learners as a general introduction to different media arts. I developed 3 of the 4 units in the course:

  • Unit 1: Photography

  • Unit 3: Animation

  • Unit 4: Portfolio Project

Each unit was made up of 6 lessons and a unit project. You can see an overview of a typical lesson layout here on the right.

My work included:

  • All lesson content for each of the 3 units I developed.

  • Lesson plans and differentiated learning resources for each unit.

  • Collaborative discussion forums in each lesson.

  • Evaluation rubrics for lesson tasks and unit assignments.

Skills.

Structuring narrative and learner journey

Creating ongoing opportunities for feedback

Writing clear content and instructions

The takeaways.

It began with modest efforts at course creation, but over my years of working with Rosedale Academy, my skills in digital course creation have expanded to include advanced technical and visual graphics skills and motivated my return to school in a Master of Educational Technology.
